7-2 win over Woodfield Grove…

Holders Telford Park hosted Woodfield Grove for the first tie of the 2016 Competition

On a sunny, but very chilly day, Woodfield Grove came to Telford Park for the first of the fixtures in this year’s competition.

First up were the boy’s and men’s singles and each club took a win, the men being particularly hard fought with tie-breaks in both sets.

New Woodfield member Alec Kenningham won his first Boys 16 and Under match for the club, 6-0 6-1, against Finn Raben-Christensen, and Anna Thompson, playing for the first time as an adult rather than a junior, saw off a strong challenge from Florrie Black by holding her nerve in the third set of the match tie-break to win the Open Women’s singles.

These were the only two rubbers WGTC won, but the team fought hard, Charles Van Caloen narrowly losing the Men’s Singles in two straight, very tight, tiebreak sets to Mark Rothwell, while it was a first match outing for several of the visiting team.

This is what the competition is all about!

Especially well done to Woodfield’s Viviana Bustamente, who played her first match ever.  Even though she lost to Anna Patchett in the Girls U16s, she overcame her nerves and played a good game.

In the Men’s 45+  Telford’s Richard Povey’s experience won out over Jon’s enthusiasm and verve, also playing his first match for Woodfield Grove.

The doubles matches were very entertaining to watch, especially the men’s, who specialised in very exciting rallies volley to volley – fabulous reactions from all!

Well done to everyone on a great start to the season.
