Grafton v Woodfield Grove

A convincing 7-2 win…

On a perfect day for tennis with alfresco luncheon, all matches were played in good spirit at Grafton Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday 10 May.

Several of the seemingly one-sided games were much closer than the score suggests, with lots of deuces and so on as Woodfield Grove gamely challenged Grafton but the hosts went ahead 3-1 after the first round of matches.

Woodfield Grove's Maggie Hodges fought gamely against Grafton's Maureen Kenny but was edged out and then stepped in for the doubles!

Woodfield Grove’s Maggie Hodges fought gamely against Grafton’s Maureen Kenny but was edged out and then stepped in for the doubles!

Murray Sutton and Kath Bower out-steadied Dougie Kerr and Carole Britton 6-1 6-1 in the mixed, while, in the women’s vets, Maureen Kenny just edged a very tight first set v Maggie Hodges 7-6, which effectively decided the match, and Anna Thompson pulled one back with a strong 6-2 6-0 win over the game Katie Diamond in the Girls Under 16s.

Meanwhile, the boys, Ollie Cumming and Tom Wade were giving spectators the match of the tie, with Grafton’s Ollie giving away a year or two and several inches as he battled back from losing the first 2-6 to take it, 6-3 6-2, over Woodfield’s Tom, who was playing his first competitive match.

Mike Young beat Mark Jannaway 6-2 6-0 in a hard hitting contest to decide the men’s open singles rubber.

Lucy Witter, on her debut, and Candice Kyle were hitting cleanly in the women’s open singles, but Lucy was the more accurate to take Grafton’s led to 4-1.

Luke and Neel and Eddie Tomlinson then tamed Aiden Doyle’s booming serve to take the doubles 6-0 6-1.

Woodfield then had to cope with a no show for the ladies doubles but Maggie gamely substituted putting an extra bandage on her knee to partner Alison Epton. This was close and smiley and Rachel Codd and Sophie Oliver took it 6-3 6-4.

This left the Men’s 45, which was a close three-setter, David Snook recovering well after losing the first set 4-6 to take the second 6-1 and winning10/8 in the tense match tie break.
