Grafton defeat Wigmore in close encounter

Grafton defeat Wigmore 6-3…

FullSizeRender-1Lots of good tennis on Saturday 21 May, with some tight matches and two tiebreaks that decided the outcome of this Millennium Cup tie hosted at Grafton against Wigmore.

Felicity Sampson and Kath Bower got the hosts off to a good start.

Felicity won the women’s singles, 6-1 6-1, proving too strong for Telford’s Charlene Hussey, while Kath earned a confidence-boosting win outlasting Anne Boucnik 6-4 6-2 in the Ladies Vets.

The two key rubbers followed on court.

In the men’s singles Grafton’s Mike Young seemed to be in control at 6-3 and ahead in the second set, but then Pete Keeling fought back to level 7-6. Mike regained focus to get over the line 10-8 in the match tiebreak.

Alongside, the boys Ollie Cumming (G) and Seb Fallowfield (W) battled out another epic, Ollie emerging victorious 2-6 7-6 6-2

Wigmore clawed back a rubber thanks to their girl Phoebe Dennis halting Nail Mohamed’s Millennium Cup run with a 6-2 6-1 win, which required a scorer in the latter stages.

Grafton Captain Murray Sutton was unable to celebrate his return to the men’s vets (Legends?) duties, falling to the power of Zyggie Szadujko, 6-3 6-3, literally, after one epic rally, falling to his knees!

This put Grafton up 4-2.

Grafton’s Eddie Tomlinson and Alex Hamlin are a well-honed men’s doubles combo and it showed as they won the tie for the hosts allowing Julian Stubbs and Matt Kiziltan only two games.

Rachel Codd and Monica Parrott added a point getting past stalwarts Alexandra McAdam-Clarke and Sharon Goulds 6-4 6-0 after a tight first set in the women’s doubles.

FullSizeRenderThe mixed doubles was very close: Pete Keeling dredged his energy reserves after his singles to help Annette Barett win a valuable point at the expense of Wigmore’s untried pair of Mike Bright and Mary Prickett 2-6 6-4 [10-9].

This put Grafton in the clubhouse on 22 points, closely observing the remaining results.
