Telford Park scoop up the win over Norbury Park

Visitors overcome their hosts 6-3…

Hosts Norbury Park got off to a good start with the first win on Sunday 12 May – a straight sets victory in the boys fixture, with their new boy Mani Davis beating Telford Park’s Zak Lavender, but the visitors would scoop up the win by the end of the day to leap into second place in the Points Standings.

The Women’s Singles was a real humdinger, between two ladies who were equally matched in hairstyle, outfits and ability (see photo).

Telford’s Ellen Hoyle finally got the better of Clare Williams in a match tiebreak, 6-7 6-1 [1-0].

Sadly, Norbury Park were unable to field a girl, so had to forfeit this rubber, and Telford’s veteran Keith Lavender didn’t put a foot wrong, overpowering Vlad Shalnev with the loss of only two games.

After the first round Telford were in a good position leading 3-1.

In the second round, the Women’s Doubles was a topsy-turvey affair.

Norbury’s Anne-Marie O’Hara & Lisa Patient went 5-0 up in the first set, only to lose the next 5 games to the Telford partnership of Juliet Griffiths & Dilwen Roberts to level at 5-all.

The Norbury Ladies recovered their poise and won the match 7-5 6-1, played by both teams in very good humour.

The Men’s Doubles was a straight set victory for Mark Rothwell & Tom Fellows of Telford against Norbury’s Anthony Abell & Chris Christou, new recruits to The Millennium Cup this season.

Two excellent and hard fought singles matches ended one apiece, with an incredibly tense men’s match between Norbury new member Dhyan Dussaram and Telford’s Stephane Legrande, going to Telford 10-8 in the match tiebreak, and ladies veteran Thelma Ziervogel from Norbury beating Sally Binny 7-5 6-4 in an exhausting contest.

As the score was now 5-4 to Telford Park, the pressure eased on the mixed doubles rubber, and Telford Park clinched this with one break of serve in each set – a very fit Ellen Hoyle playing her second match of the day with James Binney, beating Helen Mountain & Terry McGranaghan from Norbury Park.

Final score Telford Park 6, Norbury 3.

Both Norbury Park and Telford Park have one more tie to play, the former against Woodfield Grove while the latter take on League leaders Grafton this coming weekend.
