Telford Park defeat Wigmore at home

Telford Park hosted Wigmore on Sunday 14 April in the Millennium Cup, and came up with a 7-2 win over their guests.

Kicking off the first round was a long match in the Women’s Over 40 Singles, in which Telford’s Kate Sheehy prevailed over Jenny Burton, 6-0 7-5.

The Boys Under 16 singles between Zak Lavender and Ben Spink were on court for nearly two hours, with lots of long rallies, the Wigmore player finding his form in the second set and carrying it through to the match tiebreak, 1-6 7-5 [10-8].

The mixed doubles also proved to be a good match but Wigmore’s Clare Sanderson & Paul Billett were too strong for Telford’s Dilwen Roberts & Paul Beesley, winning in straight sets, 6-4 6-2.

In the Men’s Over 45 Singles, there was another very close finish, hinging on the match tiebreak in which Telford’s Keith Lavender edged out the win over Toby Young, 6-3 3-6 [10-8].

At the end of round one it was 2-2 with all to play for.

The second round of rubbers started with a well-matched in the Girls Under 16 Singles that saw Tilly Reed put Telford ahead against Ines Wiggin, 6-3 6-4.

The Men’s Open Singles was a quality match some excellent tennis, Stephane Le Grande coming through against Wigmore’s Tom Murray, 6-3 6-3.

There was loads of close play in the Women’s Doubles, in which Dilwen playing her second match teamed up with Juliet Griffith to beat Lynette Boot & Karen Davey, 6-4 6-2.

The Men’s Doubles was also well contested, but consistency won through as Mark Rothwell & Richard Povey notched up an unassailable 6-2 lead with their straight sets win over Sulphuro Burrell & Fabio Dias 6-3 6-3.

The last rubber of the day on was the Women’s Open Singles in which Clare Sanderson, still fresh from her earlier victory, proved to be no match for Pru Hodgkinson who took the final point for Telford Park, 6-2 6-1.
