Wigmore wash away Woodfield Grove’s hopes

Despite the diluvian forecast that presented itself on Sunday 31 May when Wigmore hosted Woodfield Grove, all players were determined to make the most of conditions and Keem Chung for the hosts was fastest out of the blocks  in the Men’s Open Singles, moving smartly to a 6-2 6-3 victory over Blaise Marin-Curtoud.

Maggie Hodges and Gill Mezzey adopted a steadier pace in the Ladies Vets (Over 45s), neither player giving an inch over a marathon three-setter with Maggie just edging it 11-9 in the final, long set.

The mixed doubles was a tightly-fought affair with all four players in fine form and it was unfortunate that Woodfield had to concede the tie-break due to external time pressure.

It was a pleasure to watch the quality of shot making on display from both players in the Girls match, with Anna Thompson of Woodfield just getting the better of the key points.

Esme Kyle and Nell Lindsell put on a fine show, both of hitting and chasing down the ball in the Open Women’s Singles.

It looked like it might go to a third set when Esme moved to 3 – 0 in the second, but Nell pulled back to take the match 6-3 6-3.

In the Men’s Vets (Over 40s) David Snook battled gamely for Woodfield but couldn’t resist the irresistible force that was John Maclean.

The true spirit of the Millennium Cup really showed itself in the doubles matches with all eight players bending to their task seemingly oblivious to the driving rain.

A closely fought Ladies Doubles match was only resolved by a tie-break in Wigmore’s favour.

In the Men’s Doubles, a brief revival in the second set by Woodfield passed, like the rain, leaving Wigmore to run out clear winners in both the match and the tie, by 6-2, both clubs failing to field players in the Boys 16 and Unders.
